For Example, J'accuse: To anyone who enjoys reading, to anyone who cherishes the arts, to anyone who loves doing research, there are only two mortal sins.

The first is book burning. And the second is censorship. Actually they're equally reprehensible.

Unpaginated, but 16pp inc photos of Diana Ward, Jean, Colin, George Lacy, Donald Burr, and Billy Leonard - Souvenir programme for The Liverpool Empire's touring company production of Porter and Wodehouse's oft-revived musical farce, "Anything Goes".

Starring were:Donald Burr, Diana Ward, Billie Leonard,, Jean Colin and George Lacy. Also in this production's cast were Blake Dorn, Richard Clarke, Joe Lee, Norman Bartlett, Eddie Lee, Zillah Carter, Albert Darnley, Lee Keen, Ah Woo Sing, Joyce Stemp, Alec Harland, Richard Mills, Matthew Newton, Eileen Ogden, Henrietta Cavendish, Billie Worth, Denis Rivers, Barney Gatt, Graham Pockett, and David Tubb..

Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse wrote the book and Porter wrote the music.

A farce set to music and set aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. There's a love-sick stowaway, an heiress engaged to a Lord, a Nightclub singer and Public Enemy #13. Since its 1934 debut on Broadway where it played for more than a year and and its London premier in 1935 where it has 261 performances, it's been one of the most oft revived musical comedies.

Lacy began his theatre career in about 1925, when he was all of 12 years old. Five years later he ran away from home, not to join a circus but to become a "serious" actor. However, after a two-year tour of Ireland, he returned home to play "Dame" for the first time in panto. As part of his training he studied ballet and designed his own costume.

PROVENANCE: this item comes from the collection of H. W. Roxburgh of Liverpool, in whose extensive collection of theatrical ephemera this item was contained. It was purchased at Fellows and Sons Auction, Birmingham (UK) in Aug, 2007.

The pamphlet has an inked notation by the prior owner, "to London" which is rather confusing since neither this show nor the one advertised for a future showing, were headed to London. And a rusted staple.
