14pp inc b&w portraits of June Bronhill, David Knight, Wendy Bowman and Robert Crewdson - Souvenir programme for The Liverpool Empire's 1968 production of Ivor Novello's 1940's musical for which he wrote the book and music, with lyrics by Christopher Hassall. One of Novello's most popular musicals, it opened in London's West End in March 1939 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. But timing was bad and it had to close at the start of WWII in September 1939. However, it reopened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1942 and ran for a total of 969 performances. Novello, (1893 - 1951), was a Welsh composer, singer and actor, and one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th Century. His first taste of notoriety came as a result of the song, "Keep the Home Fires Burning", which he composed during World War I. Novello occasionally took to the stage playing dramatic roles, such as the title character in the first London production of Ferenc Molnar's "Liliom" in 1926. He also appeared on in West End musicals of his own devising; including this one. This production, 24 years after it first appeared at this theatre, featured David Knight in the role Novello played originally, and June Bronhill, Wendy Bowman, Robert Crewdson, Elisabeth Wade, Pauline Greta, Shirley May, Nicholas Hawtry, etc. PROVENANCE: this item comes from the collection of H. W. Roxburgh of Liverpool, in whose extensive collection of theatrical ephemera this item was contained. It was purchased at Fellows and Sons Auction, Birmingham (UK) in Aug, 2007. This is in VG+ condition except for some small splits at folds and some notations in red ink at the top of the inside.
