One tri-fold page - Souvenir programme for The Liverpool Empire's 1944 production of the touring company of Ivor Novello's musical for which he wrote the book and music, with lyrics by Christopher Hassall. One of Novello's most popular musicals, it opened in London's West End in March 1939 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. But timing was bad and it had to close at the start of WWII in September 1939. However, it reopened at the Adelphi Theatre in 1942 and ran for a total of 969 performances. Novello, (1893 - 1951), was a Welsh composer, singer and actor, and one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th Century. His first taste of notoriety came as a result of the song, "Keep the Home Fires Burning", which he composed during World War I. Novello occasionally took to the stage playing dramatic roles, such as the title character in the first London production of Ferenc Molnar's "Liliom" in 1926. He also appeared on in West End musicals of his own devising; including this one. This production featured Novello and Dunstan Hart, Edgar Elmes, Olive Gilbert, Anne Pinder, Victor Boggetti etc.several of whom were reprising their West End roles, PROVENANCE: this item comes from the collection of H.
