4pp - Souvenir programme for The Liverpool Empire's 1947 production of the touring company of Ivor Novello's musical romance for which he wrote the book, music and lyrics. This was the only Novello musical for which he wrote lyrics. Novello, (1893 - 1951), was a Welsh composer, singer and actor, and one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th Century. His first taste of notoriety came as a result of the song, "Keep the Home Fires Burning", which he composed during World War I. Novello's musicals were very much in the style of operetta. According to Wikipedia, the play opened at the Hippodrome Theatre, London on 21 April 1945. and ran for 1022 performances making it one of Novello's most successful shows. In addition to Novello, this production starred Olive Gilbert, Zena Dare and Robert Andrews (all from the London cast) as well as: Dunstan Hart, Edgar Elmes, Anne Pinder, Victor Boggetti, James Milner, Vanessa Lee, Harry Fergusson, Hilary De Chaville, Lilian Hutchins, Anne Roberts, Estelle Balotine, Noelle Rawson, Delia Garcia, Joan Samman, Grace Galbraith, June Barry, Joyce Small, David Lawrence, and Gordon Duttson, Jack Minster directed and Harry Acres did the orchestrations. Frank Staff was responsible for choreography and ensembles, Keith Lester arranged Miss de Chaville's dance and decor was by Joseph Carl. Stanley Earnshaw handled lighting, costumes were designed by F. Dawson with the production staged by William Newman. William Newman was also production manager and Winifred Newman was business manager and stage director, Victor Melleney was stage manager and Bebe Verdi was Ballet Mistress and assistant stage manager.
