The author was born, Dinah Maria Mulock at Stoke-upon-Trent in 1826. In 1865 she married George Lillie Craik a partner with Macmillan, publishers and from whence comes her pseudonym (Mrs Craik). They lived in Kent for the rest of her life.

Illustrations are signed H. Paterson and are probably by Helen Allingham (née Paterson) (1848-1926).

Covers (green buckram gilt stamped Arts & Crafts movement style decor and titles to front and spine) are a bit edgeworn with some small chips out of the buckram, esp at the bumped corners. AEG. FPDP has inked prior owner's details scribbled over and a tiny label "Brown, Salisbury" which is presumed to be the bindery or the original bookseller (or both). FEP is stamped "THIS BOOK MUST NOT BE DAMAGED" apparently with a children's make your own rubber stamp set and with a childs pencilled name and date and an inked copy of that data and is detached but present. Half-title is loose and frontis plate is detached but present. Title page is loose but present with inked "Code Number 1872/Mrs Jay".
