He started writing in the early 1930s, and quickly a major name of the thriller genre. John Le Carre described him as "the source on which we all draw." In this novel, he delves into the political chaos that was (and is) Indonesia, post colonialism. Covers (aqua cloth with gilt titles on a scarlet label to the spine) are immaculate.
