297pp + 2pp publisher's catalogue - Volume 4 (of four) of the Fourth Edition of the classic originally published in 140 numbers from November 7, 1752, to March 9, 1754; edited and largely written by John Hawkesworth, with contributions by Samuel Johnson, Richard Bathurst and Joseph Warton. Bound in contemporary, full calf leather with gilt rules to the front, rear and spine with a gilt numeral 4 also to the spine. Covers are less worn and soiled than might be expected of a 250-year-old book. Textblock is clean and tight except for contemporary inked inscription and notation on FPDP and inked notation on RPDP and discoloration around edges of EPs. An engraving is laid in as a frontis, though whether original to the volume I can't be certain.
