388, [4]pp inc frontis - This is Vol IX of Macmillan's "The Works of Charles Kingsley" series. It includes two b&w illustrations each by Paton and Skelton.
Kingsley (1842-1875), son of a vicar, was educated at King's College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge. His first novel Alton Locke was published in 1850. This, his most famous book, was originally published in 1863. Covers (original blue cloth with gilt titling to spine) are slightly edgeworn with bumped corners. Page edges lightly soiled (esp top edge). There are several title pages: Series half-title page (with initials of previous owner pencilled in); Series title page with publisher and date; Half-title page; Tissue-guarded frontis facing Title page; Dedication page; ToC. Slight foxing and discolouration to end papers, o/w clean and tight.
