In his preface, dedicating the book to "The Rev B S Chambers", Howard said it was his reading, 32+ years earlier, of Paine's The Age of Reason which set him on the course of studying religious/evolution theory and philosophy which eventually brought him to the conclusions espoused in this volume. Those studies included reading the works of Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Herbert Spencer, Charles Darwin and others.
