469pp plus 47pp publisher's classified and indexed catalogue and 6pp publisher's ads - The somewhat melodramatic story of poor sanitary conditions and public apathy causing an outbreak of cholera. Kingsley (1842-1875), son of a vicar, was educated at King's College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge. His first novel Alton Locke was published in 1850. It was an expose of social injustice suffered by agricultural labourers and workers in the clothing trade. His most famous book, The Water Babies was published in 1863. Burgundy cloth covers with gilt device to front and gilt titles to spine and blind-stamped device to rear. Corners bumped. Covers also have some edgewear and rubbing. Page edges lightly soiled. Sunday school gift plate dated "1894" to FPDP and discolouring on FEP. Slight foxing and discolouration to end papers, o/w clean and tight.
