430pp inc glossary and B&W frontis portrait of author - Undated Lotus Library edition, apparently early 1900s. Romance set amidst the city of Carthage during the Punic Wars. An epic combining lust, cruelty, riches, ritual and sensuality. It's considered to be one of the first works of heroic fantasy. It's the love story of Salammbo, daughter of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar, and Matho, a Libyan mercenary. Covers (purple - yes, I said purple - cloth with blind-stamped floral pattern surrounding the titles to the front and gilt-stamped titles and design to the spine) has fading and is edgeworn with bumped corners and sunned spine. Textblock is clean and tight except for foxing throughout.
