287pp inc colour frontis plus notes - Originally subtitled, "the voyages and adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight, of Burrough, in the county of Devon, in the reign of her most glorious majesty Queen Elizabeth", this, like all Strang Library editions was "carefully edited for school and home reading". And as with other Strang Library editions, especially in this good condition, it's very collectable Kingsley (1842-1875), son of a vicar, was educated at King's College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge. His first novel Alton Locke was published in 1850. It was an expose of social injustice suffered by agricultural labourers and workers in the clothing trade. His most famous book, The Water Babies was published in 1863. Kingsley, who held the post of Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University between 1860-69, when he originally published this novel in 1855. He published several others before he eventually died 20 years later. Cover is brown paper-covered boards decorated to look like cloth with titles in white and picture within circular frame over orange vertical floral-decorated strip Titling in gilt on orange ground over same brown cloth design to spine. Slightly bumped corners with light edgewear. Sunday school prize book plate pasted to FPDP. EPS decorated. Light foxing throughout.
