16pp inc illustrations. One of the very collectable and scarce "Take Home Books" series from the 1950s and '60s. 1st ed. This volume deals with the British Isles and their defences and strategic alliances. Alastair Buchan was the son of the novelist John Buchan (author of The 39 Steps). During WWII he served in the Canadian Army, taking part in the Dieppe Raid in 1942. He had been a Liberal candidate, editor of The Economist, Washington correspondent for The Observer. In 1958 he became the first director of The Institute for Strategic Studies in London and later, Professor of International Relations at Oxford University. He was co-author of Arms and Stability in Europe co-authored with Philip Windsor.
