362 pp - Undated but apparently 1923, based on Author's Note. Based in Lesotho, Keable was an Anglican priest and author of several novels in the 1910s and 20s. Recompence is based on an incident that happened to him in 1916. "Stationed in Hlotse, Keable's parish extended all the way to Mokhotleng. While visiting an outpost in 1916, he was mistaken for the local policeman by a madman, and shot in the thigh. He was carried down Sani Pass to Himeville and only just survived." Married, he went to the trenches of France as a chaplain but lost his faith and ran off with a redhead (or ran off with a redhead and lost his faith). He died in Tahiti at the age of 40, according to an article in The Sunday Times, South Africa. Covers (blue cloth with black titles to front and spine) are edgeworn with bumped corners and sunned spine. Insides are clean and tight except for soiled edges and some foxing throughout.
