16pp - One of the very collectable "Take Home Books" series from the 1950s and '60s. 1st ed. Water, water all about and nary a drop to drink. Well, not quite, as this book explains, only 3/10 of the Earth's surface is dry land. Most of it is less than 3,000 or 4,000 feet above sea level. All you ever wanted to know about the sea and its flora and fauna and vital importance to our lives. Smith, who studied Zoology at Oxford, was, at the time of writing this booklet, science correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. Before that he'd worked for The Manchester Guardian and had been an editor with The Drum (Africa's then top-selling illustrated magazine). He had also written three travel books. Since then he has written several notable science books, including The Body which more than 800.000 copies worldwide. Smith worked extensively in both television and radio, wrote for several natural history programmes and presented TV series such as Tomorrow's World. A keen traveller and explorer, Smith was the first Briton to cross the Alps in a balloon.
