16pp -- One of the very collectable "Take Home Books" series from the 1950s and '60s. 1st ed. "One house in every 15 is a slum... The publication [in 1954] of these figures was a prelude to the latest slum clearance 'drive' initiated in 1955. Between then and the end of September1962, 381,675 dwellings in England and Wales, and about 55,500 in Scotland, have either been closed or demolished .. One is tempted to conclude that if clearance is continued at the present rate the problem of slums will have disappeared within the next ten year. Nothing could be further from the truth. At the present rate... the problem is getting worse, not better." Dr Parker was an assistant lecturer in social administration at the London School of Economics and Political Science when he wrote this booklet. He was working with the Rountree Trust Housing Study carrying out research into the work of local housing authorities. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at Bristol University.
