16pp - Undated, but the British Library lists it as 1957. One of the very collectable "Take Home Books" series from the 1950s and '60s. 1st ed. "In all ages and all countries - no matter how long the time and great the distances that have separated tribes and nations from other tribes and nations - man has always had an idea about what we call 'religion'. His ideas have seldom been the same. But in nearly all cases they have been about a person or persons, a force or forces, different from, more powerful and greater than man." Lord Soper was Superintendent of West London Mission and had been President of the Methodist Conference in 1953. Born in 1903, he was a veteran Labour peer and Methodist campaigner. Soper was famed as a campaigner on social issues and as a strong advocate of pacifism and nuclear disarmament. As such he backed CND in its early days. Created a Labour peer in 1965. He is best remembered for his numerous appearances at Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park, where he first preached in 1942. See our exclusive feature article about Take Home Books and other subjects at ..
