1 Sassoon, Siegfried
Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man
Faber & Faber Ltd, London, 1944
Reprint, Cloth, Very Good, No Jacket

255pp - The memoirs of the early years of one of WWI's best war-poets. Wikipedia finds it "remarkable ... that, prior to its publication, Sassoon's reputation rested entirely on his poetry, mostly written during and about World War I. Only ten years after the war ended, after some experience of journalism, did he feel ready to branch out into prose.

"So uncertain was he of the wisdom of this move that he elected to publish MFHM anonymously. It is in effect the autobiography of his early years, but is presented in the form of a novel, with false names being given to the central characters, including Sassoon himself, who appears as "George Sherston", and his mother ("Aunt Evelyn")."

Covers are bright red cloth with black titles to sunned spine and are lightly soiled with bumped corners. Other than an inked prior-owner's signature to FEP, the textblock is immaculate. Front cover a bit damaged at lower right corner where the board is deteriorated/gone from under the cloth which is faded by intact. Inked gift inscription dated "Christmas 1880" to FEP. Cracked hinge at rear of textblock, otherwise clean and tight.
