The Life of Nelson

320pp - This is THE biography of Horatio, Lord Nelson. It was originally published in 1813, eight years after Nelson's death at Trafalgar. "It immediately became a classic of English literature and has remained so ever since," according to a review by Contemporary Review Company Ltd.. "The text itself reads as well now as it did in 1813," the review continues, "and even Lord Byron, who grew to detest Southey, admitted that Southey's prose 'is perfect . . . The Life of Nelson is beautiful.'". The historian and biographer, Alan Palmer, said, Southey's work is not only a superb biography but a "period piece" of Regency writing the equal of Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott.
Undated, but apparently 1903, based on Prize bookplate attached to FPDP and dated "Session 1903-04" . It's bound in burgundy embossed leather with gilt title and black borders to the front and spine and bevelled edges. The cover is a bit scuffed and has a crease on the rear. Corners are bumped. Page edges are soiled. Prize bookplate is attached to FPDP. There is a child's handwritten name and address in red ink below the prize bookplate. End papers are yellow. Pages are tanned and foxed. Binding is tight.
