1 Lodge, Sir Oliver
Reason and Belief
Methuen & Co Ltd, London, 1910
First Edition, Cloth, Very Good, No Jacket

xiv, 211pp inc index and "references to quotations plus 31-page publisher's catalogue dated October 1910 (Pages 25-28 and 29-32 of the publisher's catalogue, are unopened) - Lodge (1851-1940), was a world-renowned physicist who achieved world fame for his pioneering work in radio. He was also the first man to transmit a message by wireless and he invented electric spark ignition. And did I mention he was a spiritualist? So much so that he dedicated this book to "Arthur James Balfour, past president of the British Association and also of the Society for Psychical Research..."

Lodge authored books on science, philosophy and spiritualism including: Man and the Universe, Survival of Man, Modern Problems, The War and After, Ether and Reality.and The Reality of a Spiritual World.

In this volume, he explains in the Preface, he attempts to come to terms with "the converging influence of discoveries made during the nineteenth century in many diverse departments of knowledge [which] has of late years notably increased the uncertainty which thoughtful persons have often felt about the best method of utilising Old Testament narratives for the education and edification of children."

Covers (red cloth with bright gilt titles and rules to the front board and gilt titles to the sunned spine) are a bit edgeworn and soiled with a small ink splotch near the centre of the spine. Textblock has pencilled owner's name to FEP and foxing, mostly to EPs and prelims, otherwise clean and tight.
