360pp inc frontis and 11 other b&w plates - Mayhew's sociological study (through a series of interviews) of Victorian London and its working and other poor. When first published, Mayhew described the work as "The first attempt to publish the history of a people, from the lips of the people themselves -- giving a literal description of their labour, their earnings, their trials and their sufferings, in their own 'unvarnished' language..." DJ (now in protective sleeve) is worn and sunned to spine, price-clipped and has several closed tears (to flap folds) and two open tears (one large and one small) to spine. Ribbon book mark bound in. Undated, but Inked gift inscription to FEP is dated 1956. Soiling to a few pages.
