This is a "history as it might have been" or "alternative history" novel in which Captain "Gus" Washington and his team of navvies are driving a tunnel under the Atlantic. Gus, a descendant of the infamous George Washington, executed as a traitor after the Battle of Lexington, sees this as his opportunity to redeem the family name, according to the FantaticFiction dot co dot uk site.
