1 Innes, Hammond
Atlantic Fury
Companion Book Club, London, 1963
Book Club (BCE/BOMC), Cloth, Very Good, No Jacket

271pp - Although (Ralph) Hammond(-)Innes (1913 - 1998) (AKA Ralph Hammond) began his writing career in the late 1930s, it wasn't until the early 1950s that he achieved major success with such books as The Lonely Skier, Campbell's Kingdom, and The Mary Deare.

In this thriller, the army base on the (fictional) Hebridean island of Laerh, is suddenly evacuated, having become redundant. The evacuation must take place quickly to avoid the inevitable winter storms. But lo and behold, just as the evacuation is underway an extremely severe early storm, wrecks the transport boats and hampers rescue attempts.

In the sub-plot Iain Ross, was killed in the war, or was he? His brother has now found evidence that he swapped identities with a dead man after a shipwreck.

Oh, did I mention Laerh was the Ross home until they were thrown out to make room for the army base years ago, or that Iain's shipwreck was off the coast of this interesting island? No, you wouldn't believe me if I had.

Standard CBC cover style in grey cloth with gilt titles in a scarlet oval to the faded spine. Textblock is immaculate, except for soiling of page edges.

In The Land, Ian Ferguson holds the key to the disaster that had overtaken a geological survey team in Labrador. surely he's aware of the all too similar event nearly 50 years ago in which his own grandfather disappeared. So is that what drives him to make the perilous journey through the savage, lonely wastes to the scene of the disaster? Innes researched the book by travelling across Labrador and put together a word picture of the country, depicting it as "the grimmest, most desolate country I have ever been in."
