224pp inc several b&w photos - Michaela (1914-2003) and her husband, Armand (author of On Safari, the Story of My Life, my stock number 002653) were wildlife photographers, he from Belgium and she from London. They arguably invented the TV nature series in which the human stars get up close and personal to the "lower" animal stars. Michaela, a bit of a fashion plate, had as her trademark, the application of lipstick or the combing of her hair during the programme. She explained "that she could not possibly get into the water with crocodiles until she had put on her eyebrow pencil."
Born in London, Michaela's archaeologist father was killed in the trenches at the start of WWI. She won a scholarship to fashion school and trained as a dress designer in Paris, which could explain her fashion consciousness. At the outbreak of WWII she retunred to London and joined the Women's Voluntary Service, designing her own stylish uniform. In 1945 she met an American admiral, and the next day he proposed to her.
She wasn't really attracted to him, perhaps especially since he was a widower with young children. But she accepted because, she said later, she wanted to get to America "and hoped that love would follow". It didn't, and when she met Armand at a New York party, they began an affair and the rest, as they say, is history.
Standard CBC cover style in slightly soiled orange cloth with gilt titles in an brown oval to the spine. Textblock is immaculate, except for very slight soiling of EPS and page edges.
