by the author of 'Busy Bee' and 'Strawberry Bank' (Leigh, Netta) The Story of a Summer Day Seeley, Jackson and Halliday, London, 1875 First Edition, Decorative Cloth, Very Good +, No Jacket
Froment, E. (Eugene), 236pp including 24 engravings by Eugene Froment - This extremely scarce volume (no other copy currently online) is by "the author of 'Busy Bee' and 'Strawberry Bank'" who apparently was a Miss Whittemore, who wrote under the pseudonym of Netta Leigh. The illustrations (full page plates) are by Eugene Froment (1844-1900), who was born in Paris, but later moved to London. His shop produced woodcuts for "L'Illustration", "Graphic of London", and other journals. This is a lovely Victorian children's story, told in large type with short chapters, perfect for bedtime reading. Covers (cloth is light blue floral motif on a midnight blue ground with gilt titles to front, similarly to spine) are very lightly edgeworn, with slightly more wear to slightly bumped corners and some soiling to rear board. Text block is very lightly foxed and spotted throughout with an inked owner's name dated "Dec 29/74" and a very tiny floral painting (which appears to be integral) to FEP, page 157 has a ragged, open, small tear to the centre of the spine edge and is minimally detrimental to the text at that edge. Plate between pages 148 and 149 is detached but present and has minor edgewear. Overall a beautiful specimen. 003448 Price:
