16pp - One of the very collectable and scarce "Take Home Books" series from the 1950s and '60s. 1st ed. A primer in what the education system in the UK was like in the early '60s as a result of the Education Act of 1944. Secondary Modern schools, eleven-plus examinations, O-levels, A-levels, GCEs and all the rest.
Jackson was an "educational and childcare activist". He was a major proponent of comprehensive schools and of the establishment of the Open University. A pioneer of the University Clearing House system, he became director of the Advisory Centre for Education in 1962 "and built it into a formidable vehicle for educational discussion and governmental lobbying." Jackson founded the National Children’s Centre in 1975. He also pioneered the Childcare Switchboard phone-in on local radio, during the '70s.
