270pp + 32pp publisher's catalogue - Subtitled, "An episode in the story of an ancient house". Vol II of the German first edition (in English) of the publisher's "Collection of British and American Authors" series. This is a less well-known novel by the author of "The Prisoner of Zenda", which is said by some to have been the first adventure novel. This novel is seen as either the last of his most popular writings or the first of his least popular ones.
Hope (Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins) (1863-1933), a lawyer, wrote during his spare time. He was also a leading propagandist for the British during World War I, and was knighted for those efforts. Covers (maroon boards with gilt title to leather label on spine) are excellent except for slight darkening of edges. Textblock is immaculate.
